Happy New Year! I have all kinds of conference updates and reminders for you! After that, there are
some helpful links/ideas/resources for y'all to use/tweak/toss. :-)
The Ordinary Heroes WACA conference will take place from March 11th to the 13th in Yakima!
I want to make sure you all know about our beautiful WACA website! Here are all the helpful
highlights of www.wacaonline.org:
--> REGISTRATION - Under the Conference link, you can find all kinds of information about hotel offerings and of course the registration form. Be sure to plan ahead and register early!
--> Hotel (Holiday Inn) - You can reserve your room(s) online or over the phone. If you would like to use the website: http://www.holidayinn.com/yakimawa and use group code “ACT” or they can call directly at 509.494.7000. The Red Lion is also an option and I believe everything is set-up for them already. I'll keep you posted, if not.
--> Hall of Fame nominations - Under the "Other" link, you may nominate a fellow hardworking leadership/ASB Adviser for the WACA Hall of Fame! Read the criteria and complete the form online.
--> Elections - Under "Conference," "Conference 2015" and then "Elections" you can see which positions are up for election at this year's conference. Each open position has an attached job description as well. If you've wanted to get involved and have any questions, please let me know. The only major restriction is that President Elect requires previous involvement in the WACA Board.
--> We have an Area 3 "blog," which is just Becky's and my area emails. Becky's emails from last year are on there, so feel free to visit http://www.wacaonline.org/, Click on MORE, then AREA INFORMATION.
--> Idea Share - Know that there are a number of ideas already on the website (http://www.wacaonline.org/idea-share.html) but that YOU CAN SUBMIT new ideas, too! At the bottom of the page is an online form. Some leadership classes have been assigned the task of submitting new ideas, which is one way to go, or you can submit all on your own. Please
participate!
--> Videos - This is one of my favorite things about the site, as these are great go-to leadership lessons to use in class. You can search by topic or theme--the video library is under the Idea Share link: (http://www.wacaonline.org/video-library.html). And don't forget, if something comes up that you think needs to be shared, please do so under the Idea Share submission form, on the WACA Facebook page, or Tweet at WACA or Ryan (@rdhealy) on Twitter! So many options!
Finally, my favorite feature, and yours... THE PRESENTER APPLICATION!! The term application is used loosely; it's mostly to let us know what your needs are as a presenter and what your topic is so that we don't double you up. Under the "Conference" tab there is a link for PRESENTERS--and
that's you. :-) Please let me know if you have any questions about presenting, and definitely consider this awesome Professional Development opportunity--particularly if you haven't every presented before.

The Seahawks and GRIT. There's lots of newsworthy Seahawks stories that come with playoffs time, but this is from way back at the beginning of the seasons:

Becky shared this a while back and it's a good lesson to leadership students, particularly later in the year like now when energy and tenacity may be waning.

--> I came across a couple Buzzfeed "articles" last month and I think they have some good leadership class applications: Adults were asked what they would change about appearances, then little kids were asked. The children said things like superhuman powers (but generally didn't want to change anything) and adults of course went to town describing what they would change about their appearance:

--> This one has techniques and tricks for impressing people that you first meet. There's a lot in here in keeping your explanations about what you do light, interesting, and then showing genuine interest in others. Since so many kids are afraid of or don't even know how to engage in
mature conversations, thought it was cool:
