Leadership: Voyage of a Lifetime
As we embark on a new school year, we are definitely sailing into uncharted waters. As WACA president, I am thinking about all the things in life I am trying to balance: family, career, WACA, and . . . a pandemic. Wow! There is a lot on my plate and I know there is a lot on your plate. Do you know the leadership activity called, “What’s on your plate?” Here’s the directions from my leadership file. I am sure this is word-for-word from a Meet the Pros session at our WACA conference where one of you shared this idea. Thank you.
Directions: Write on your plate in pictures, words, or phrases. Write the things and responsibilities in your life that fills up your time. Math-type people even like to make it into a pie graph. You will be introducing yourself to others and some of what is on your plate.
After completing this activity, I like to ask, “what is your plate?” What is the foundation you are building on for this year? I hope part of your foundation is the rest you enjoyed over the summer and the self-care strategies that you have been cultivating. Also, remind yourself of your core beliefs. Your why. Why do you choose to be a leadership teacher, activities director, ASB adviser, ASB secretary or administrator? As a reminder, I keep an index card attached to my desk, next to my phone, that is my why statement. During turbulent times, we must remember our why, our plate, our foundation.
This year we are going to be buffeted by winds from many different directions as we try to sail our ship through uncharted waters. We will try new things. We will fail. We will try again. Set your compass to your why and sail on.
