Leadership Library

Books have always held a special space in my heart. My home is filled with overflowing bookshelves containing beloved, worn-out old books that are as important to me as the friends and family in my life. These books, along with more recent additions, brought me peace and a sense of comfort during the pandemic. Just like one of my favorites, The Choose Your Own Adventure book series, life is unpredictable, and we don’t know how the story will end. This love of books is why I am thrilled to bring you the Leadership Library during this school year.

Nothing about this year is normal. We are all doing our best to love on our students and communities and still find the energy to care for ourselves. We are learning that we cannot ask more from ourselves than we are capable of giving, and it is okay to give grace to ourselves and take time to settle into a new normal with the students, colleagues, and communities we work with.

We know there are uncertainties about attending the conference in March. Be it budget concerns, substitute shortages, or a shift in energy as you are asked to give more, we get it. You are doing your best and even though it may sometimes feel like it, none of us are doing this alone. This year, members of the WACA board are committed to bringing you quality programming and networking through WACA Wednesdays, resources on the website, and our annual conference. Should you find yourself able to join us at our annual conference in Vancouver, Washington, March 9-11, 2022, you can be assured we will do our best, along with the amazing staff at the Vancouver Hilton, to help our delegates feel safe and comfortable during our time together. Registration is open now through March and it is my hope you will find a way to join us.

In the meantime, the adventures of student activities continue….

"You check your email and find 19,000 unread messages, you feel slightly overwhelmed, what do you do?"

Choice: do you give up and drown yourself in a box of chocolate? (turn to Tuesday of last week)
Choice: do you dig into the resilience that lies within you? (turn to WACA Wednesday on November 17).

Registration for the 2020 WACA Conference is now open.
After a short delay while we installed an updated registration system and tested in with our financial institution, we are now proudly back online, and open to book your registration for our 50th Anniversary Conference, March 11-13, 2020, in Kennewick, Washington.
Hopefully I will be announcing the keynote speaker lineup for the historic Conference in the coming days, I am very excited by who I am working with on wrapping up the details of their appearance.
It’s World Mental Health Day this Thursday, October 10, 2019.  With the public stigma associated with mental illness, and our work to be inclusive in our classrooms, schools, and communities, I believe we all should try to be a little better and demonstrate our love, tolerance, and empathy for everyone – especially those dealing with mental health struggles.

Welcome to the NEW Presidential Blog!
Typically, there has been one static message from the president on this main page of our Association, but hey, it’s 2019, that’s like nearing two full decades into the 21st century and I think we can up our game a little bit by making this a more contemporary website.  I am happy to be working with our new Technology Coordinator who has been working hard behind the scenes to get this site up to the functional level you—our members—deserve.

As September draws to a close and the new academic year has begun to pick up steam, we here at the Washington Activity Coordinators Association (WACA) have been very busy.  We wrapped up our Fall Board of Directors Meeting on the weekend of September 21-22, 2019 in Vancouver, Washington, where we spent a considerable amount of time looking at our processes and structures.

The 2020 Conference will be our 50th Anniversary, and like I stated when I introduced my theme at the end of the Greatest Show on Earth 2019 Conference, we are in a unique place in the history of the Association.  I believe we need to celebrate our legacy spanning the past five decades.  Can you imagine that the students in high school in 1971 when our first annual conference was held are approximately 64-69 years old now? What did we start to do back then that made us successfully meet the needs of our delegates, their students, schools, and communities?  Currently we are adapting to the changes before us in how we meet those same needs, but in 2019, as we grapple with things like social emotional learning, empathy, professional growth, culture building, equity, and inclusion in our classrooms, schools and communities.  We cannot do either of those without also looking to the future and making sure our processes and structures model what we need to continue to offer the resources and opportunities for our members to benefit from WACA in the years to come.

It’s also, National Love People Day this Monday, September 30, 2019.  Why don’t we all try to be a little better and demonstrate our love for people that day and every day.

Love is a Verb,
