Hello! I know, I am finally getting a message out to all of you in Area 3. I'm sure you have been sitting around, waiting to hear from me.
Note: If you are no longer involved in Leadership or Club/Sport/Athletic activities at your school and would like to be removed from my contact list, please let me know. AND - if you know of a new advisor I need to add - feel free to share his/her contact info with me. I GREATLY appreciate updated information.
For those of you who know me, my job changed slightly - I took on the ASB Advisor/Leadership position at Spanaway Lake HS mid-August. I hit the ground running, and have been full throttle ever since. I just wrapped up my first Homecoming week - therefore, you are now receiving your first email.
I'll give you a brief run-down of the WACA conference overview, then some other ideas and links you might find useful. Expect another email from me late November with ideas for holiday activities, MLK observance ideas and more.
Other Leadership Ideas:
My email wouldn't be complete without a Kid President video. I shared this with my students already and it's impossible to view his messages without smiling.

I think that's it for now. I don't want you to stop reading part way through.

- The conference dates are March 12-14, 2014 The theme is WACA 2014 Help! WACA Meets the Beatles!
- The conference hotels are already on the website (Hilton Garden and Red Lion).
- Remember we do a Hall of Fame presentation at the conference. If you want to nominate someone, the criteria and application are on the website. Deadlines for nominations are December 31st.
- Board positions are up for election at the conference. This year the even area reps are open, in addition to Middle Level Rep, President Elect, and a few appointed positions. Please shoot me an email if you are interested, or want to know more before the conference.
- Obviously, I will be begging, I mean asking, you all to present. Last year, we had 20 people present either a 50 min session or a Meet the Pros. I know some of you took a year off (totally acceptable) and I would love for you to share again this year. One area of need is sessions for Class and Club Advisors. I know I am struggling to support those members of my staff and would love to give them some great ideas. If we can collaborate with our Class and Club advisors, all students will benefit. If you haven't presented before, consider sharing a resource (book, video, website, manipulative) that you have found helpful in the Meet the Pros.
- Presenter applications are available on the website.
- Speaking of the website - our new and fabulous Technology Coordinator, Ryan Healy, has revamped the website. It is super user-friendly, and it is live now! You can register, you can get ideas, you can sign up to present. You can link to the hotels near the conference. Please check it out: wacaonline.org
Other Leadership Ideas:
- I've attached the registration form for John Norlin's Winter Advisor Servant Leader Workshop. If you haven't attended one of his sessions, you are missing a truly transformative experience. The majority of advisors in our area can give testimonials.
- Thank you notes: I think writing thank you notes is something that needs to be taught to teens; they don't all come by it naturally. I've attached my very informal handout for my mini-lesson. We also make our own cards. I have the yearbook advisor take a picture of my group on a full out spirit day - we photo shop "Thank You from Leadership" in the lower corner of the card. Then, I have them printed on glossy card stock through our district print shop. Staff generally appreciates receiving this type of thank you. (Again, my handout is very brief, we discuss it in class.)
