First Quarter, Thursday AM Sessions

ASB Law: Audit Procedures
Jolynn Berge, State Auditors Office
Greg Barker, Marysville Pilchuck High School

What does the auditor look for when they come to your school? In this session, participants got a chance to ask an auditor about good practices for their building and district to follow.

 

H,O H.O. Hunt
Kay Anderson & Debbie Romesburg, Clarkston High School
An all school community service project that involves all school organizations working on a community scavenger hunt to collect needed items for the Valley's helping organizations, such as YMCA, Food Bank, Salvation Army, etc.

Planning A Gender Retreat for Middle Level Girls
Ruth Anderson, Hunt Middle School
This session began with chalk talk and moved to real talk about what it means to be a female today. Participants engaged in interactive exercises developed by a group from Los Angles and adapted by the presenter for her school.

Successful School Wide Booster Club
Jo Metzger-Levin & Ross Rettenmierm Everett High School
Participants learned about a school wide booster club that encompasses students, staff and the community support of school wide activities/clubs/sports. Their strategy and game plan was shared.

Dance the Grind
Bonnie Biesler & Bruce Overstreet, Everett High School
Have you seen new positions on the dance floor you never thought were physically possible? Tired of hearing "But we don't know any other way to dance?" Worried that city ordinances will be violated at your next school dance? Participants discussed how schools are addressing the issues of excessive grinding at dances.



Leadership in the Movies
Cari Johnson, Cedar Heights Junior High
Need a great leadership lesson plan for a sub? Scrambling for an activity as your leadership class walks in? Movies could be your salvation. Participants learned tried and true lessons used to teach or review leadership concepts. The only challenge is saving them for days when the teacher is gone.

 

Coaching Ethics and Philosophy
Mick Hoffman, Hudson's Bay High School
The session focused on the reasons why one coaches. Participants looked at what basis a coach uses to make decisions.

 

Sweet Talk
Suzi Carpino, Holly Ohler, & Heidi Hellner-Gomez, Sunnyside High School
Participants Skor'ed big with Mounds of ideas for recognizing the Good'n Plenty in thier schools. Now'n Later they will thank you.

 

Bullying
Barb Pearson, Meeker Middle School
Looking at new legislation for 2003 and wondering where all the anti-bullying programming is going to fit? Well of course, give it to the activity advisor! Participants that went to this workshop got a number of ideas and strategies for a school's game book. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel.

New Secretary Session
Jeanne Urquhart, Cascade Middle School
This session was focused on new people, but veteran ASB secretaries where invited to attend as a resource to others. This session was an idea sharing time, especially for newer ASB people who brought questions and concerns. There was time for presenting ideas that have worked well in schools, followed by open discussion on the topics brought to the table. Through discussion with others, much is learned.

Second Quarter, Thursday PM I Sessions

ASB Law Specific Fundraiser Questions

What's happening in your school? This session allowed for questions for the auditor and panel about specific fundraisers in participant's building or policies that relate to ASB fundraising.

 

Super Saturday
Bryan Demaray, Klahowya Secondary School
Students volunteer to help in a community wide roadside clean up that is very visible, high energy, positive and well thought of in the Silverdale area. Participants got to see how they get 700-800 students to spend their Saturday morning picking up trash along the designated routes in their community. This activity was suggested as a great activity for districts with rival schools to challenge each other, network and build a sense of community.

 

Halftime Hoopla!
Teri Corwin & Traci Read, Kellogg Middle School
The focus of this session: How to inspire spirited involvement in middle school lunch time activities. They called players off the bench to get in the game of creative, fun activities in their cafeteria or activity center. Participants were invited to come play and take home a game plan for the next big competition.

 

Model Leadership Class
Greg Watt, Kingston Junior High
Are you struggling to put together curriculum for your leadership class? Do you need ideas of activities that you can use in your leadership class? Do you wish that you could incorporate your ASB with your leadership class? Well...to bad you missed this workshop that helped develop a leadership class that provides students with many hands-on, interactive, and relevant activities. The focus of the activities was on diversity, goal setting, decision making, communication, problem solving, and values.

 

The Great Spirit Rival

School spirit in a slump? Pep assemblies been renamed "pepless" assemblies? This clinic offered some simple ideas for invigorating students and staff's attitude and spirit.

 



PVC Pipe and You: Creative Uses for Plastic Pipe
Jeff Cohn, Decatur High School
Are you looking for some creative ways to advertise your events? Or do you need a quick movie screen for a slide show? How about a dressing room for an assembly? Participants got to see many creative ways PVC pipe can be used in leadership class, assemblies and other events. It can solve a lot of problems and make jobs easier. It has many uses, and it's fun.

Lead by Example 2003
John Bittinger, Everett High School
Do you need a "slam dunk" start to a presentation? A dazzling activity that "takes it to the hole" and sets a wonderful tone for a lesson? This workshop provided participants with a variety of short, tried-and-true activities that were based on scientific principles. It also highlighted concepts, including diversity, inspiration, brainstorming, teaming, and tapping personal potential. There were new activities as well as some of the old favorites.

Mixers and Energizers

Need some ideas about how to get groups more comfortable with each other? Need ideas to keep groups organized? This session promised to be very active as the group participated in a frenzy of mixers and energizers.

Multicultural Student Leadership: How to bring cultural awareness to your campus.

Are you struggling to put together a Multicultural program on campus? Do you need ideas and activities? Do you want to reduce the racial conflicts and bring diverse groups together? This workshop gave ideas and activities to start a program or keep it going involving students, staff, parents, and the community.

Top 10 Cheer Ideas
Cheryl Uceny, Kittitas High School
Need some fresh ideas to pep up your cheer squad? In this session, delegates got to hear an experienced cheer coach share ten of her favorite tried-and-true technique, and went home with creative ideas for spirit building, fundraising, teambuilding, and much more!

An auditor, a business office person and an activity coordinator were on hand to answer all of your questions. Question and answer forms were collected in advance so that the presenters were able to tailor the session to the participants.

Class Competition MS
Robin Uhlenkott, Woodland Middle School
Class competitions build team identity and courage teamwork. Participants learned how Woodland Middle School conducts weekly homeroom competitions and left with lots of easy-to-do ideas.

 

Middle Level Leadership Camp
Randy Heath, Director of Chinook Middle Level Camp
Kathy Lech, Chinook Assistant Director
Middle level leadership camps have been an important part of Washington's student leadership program for over a decade. This session was for people who have taken their students to camp for years as well as for those who have never heard of leadership camp. Presenters shared how to make camp experience more productive for your students. Practical tips were given to prepare students for camp and the group shared ideas about what to do after they have returned home.

Link Crew Share

Link Crew advisors worked together to create an idea bank for Link Crew programs. This was a fast paced session designed to help participants leave with many fabulous ideas.

Senior Stuff
Ruth Comstock & Suzanne Metzler, Mariner High School
Would you like to learn how to do icebreakers with 5 officers or 400 kids? This session gave ideas and materials for class officer retreats, team builders, whole-class activities, student recognition, student motivation, and class officer notebooks. Presenters shares what they do with Senior class, but other class advisors were able to adapt materials for their levels.

Competitive Academic Programs
Brent Miller, Aylen Junior High School
In this session, delegates learned about a variety of state wide academic competitive event for grades K-12. These enrichment opportunities involve young people seeking challenges which extend beyond the classroom. This session shared ideas about specific competitions that are currently being utilized by other as well as an in-depth example of starting the "Knowledge Master Open" competition at your school.

 

I Openers
Marty Fortin, Cispus Learning Center
Activities that set the tone for meetings. This session had participants actively learning different ways to set the tone for meeting that are conducted for both students and adults.

Game Winning Assemblies
Kim Peterson, Lincoln Middle School
Jim Wright, Eisenhower High School

Delegates were invited to come sit in the stands as the group shared new ideas for both Veteran's Day and Martin Luther Knig Jr. assemblies. Presenters shared assembly planning techniques, easy and effective decoration ideas, successful assembly agendas, strategies to get students involved and tons of music, speaking, and performing ideas to make such events a huge success.

Enhancing School Climate with Student-to-Student Mentoring
Jim Hummel & Eleanor Schulze, Gig Harbor High School
Participants explored the potential of Ignite–a year long, student-to-student mentoring program designed to foster resilience in youth and enhance school climate. Ignite strives to develop the asset base of youth, break barriers to success and build a caring school climate while recognizing youth as its most valuable resource.
